You all know how much I love a good super chunky yarn and how much I use Cascade's Magnum Super Chunky! So on hand I'll have new designs using Magnum and the samples for some of my most popular patterns that use Magnum as well.
One of my new designs is this free pattern for an open work infinity scarf. Made using 1 skein of Magnum & #19's it's an easy project and a great gift.
the Openwork Infinity Scarf
Materials:
1 skein Magnum Super Chunky by Cascade (123yds)
#19 needles. The piece is worked flat so either straight or circular needles are fine.
Finished measurements: 8.75"x @67" (before folding)
Cast on 12 sts.
Row 1: Sl 1 (slip stitch as if to purl), *K1, (yo, k2tog) twice; repeat from * end k1
Repeat Row 1 every row until you have enough yarn left to bind off. Bind off.
Sew ends together to make a giant loop (see pic below), wear & enjoy!
I also reworked the Misti Net Scarf in Magnum to have at the show and I really like the results! The Magnum version is very lightweight and lofty for such a large scarf. Again, an easy 1 skein project that makes a great gift! (pattern below)
the Open Work Scarf
Materials:
1 skein Magnum Super Chunky by Cascade (123yds)
#19 circular needles. I would use at least a 29" since the scarf is worked lengthwise.
Finished measurements: 5"(not pulled) x @103" (w/out fringe)
Note: these scarves are worked lengthwise.
Cast on 100 stitches.
Row 1: Sl 1 (purlwise), * yo, k2tog * k1
Repeat this row 10 times.
Bind off.
I used one strand of yarn per fringe piece. I liked a more raw edge to the fringe so I pulled the yarn instead of cutting it. Attach fringe, wear & be warm!

These are terrific ! I have a friend who spins lots of really chunky yarns and she would really like these too. The patterns would work great in handspun.

It says to cast on 12 stitches and I do not see any increases is this a typo? I can tell from looking at the at the circle that it is definitely more than 12.
ReplyDeleteThe piece is 12sts wide and worked as a long rectangle. The ends are joined and sewn together. Hope this helps!

i love the openwork scarf. I don't have #19 needles or chunky yarn right now and it's 11:05pm. So, I tried it with sport weight and #13. CO 24sts and worked the pattern just to see it. So easy and knits so quick. I cannot wait for tomorrow to get yarn and needles to make one for real. :) Plus, I was all excited about the trunk show until I noticed I am a year late. hahaha.

ReplyDeleteI have just discovered your Openwork Infinity Cowl and have just completed it for myself, save joining the ends together. Any tips on how to do this in this particular pattern? ReplyDeleteHi Susan, what I just started doing is I start with a backwards loop cast on. Then when I get to the end of the scarf I don't bind off but I go back and pick up stitches along the cast on edge and do a 3 needle bind off with the 2 edges instead of sewing them together. It gives it a more even look for this stitch pattern. Hope this helps and Happy Holidays!

Hi Cadi, Thanks! If you did a swatch to check your gauge you could multiply that by the length of the scarf. If you have @1.5sts to the inch you would cast on @100sts to get the finished length. Addi makes a 60" #19 that I use for longer pieces.

ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I had very little yarn left over of the 123yds of 1 skein of Magnum, just enough to sew the edges together. I probably knit this on the loose side, hope this helps!

It refers only to what's in the ( )'s yo, k2tog. Hope this helps!!

Hi! It's knit flat. So if you want a longer loop you can make the piece longer before you sew it together. If you want to make the piece wider, it's multiples of 5 + 2. Hope this helps!

Hi, there are 2 scarf patterns in this post. The Openwork Infinity Scarf cast on 12 stitches; then the Open Work Scarf that is knit lengthwise and you cast on 100 stitches. Hope this helps!
